Robin Newton, Conductor
Robin Newton read music at Cambridge University before going on to study conducting at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester where he was twice winner of the Ricordi Prize for Conducting Opera. He was recently awarded the Leonard Ingrams Memorial Prize and last year was shortlisted for the Arts Foundation Fellowship. Robin has studied conducting with Sir Mark Elder, Andrew Litton and David Parry.
He made his debut conducting Tosca for English Touring Opera. He has conducted Mozart’s Il re pastore for Garsington Opera and Päer’s Leonora for Bampton Classical Opera. He recently made his debut with the London Mozart Players and has also worked for the Deutsche Oper, English National Opera, Opera North and Den Nye Oper
Robin Newton has worked with leading British orchestras including the Philharmonia, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, the Orchestra of Opera North and sinfonia ViVA. He holds the position of Head of Music and staff conductor with Garsington Opera where he has assisted both David Parry and Steuart Bedford on productions ofRossini (L’equivoco stravagante, Comte Ory, La donna del lago) and Mozart (DerStein der Weisen). Most recently he was chorus master and assistant conductor to Douglas Boyd on John Cox’ first production of Fidelio.
He has also worked on many award-winning recordings of bel canto opera for Opera Rara with conductors including Sir Mark Elder, David Parry, Andrew Litton, Roland Böer and Maurizio Benini.
