Jacapo Spirei, Director

Winner of the audience prize in Salzburg for best production of the season 2012/2013 at the Landestheater, Jacopo Spirei's opera engagement as director include: Don Giovanni, Così Fan Tutte, Pilger von Mekka (Salzburg Landestheater), Cambiale di Matrimonio (Theater an der Wien), The bear, Maderna's Satyricon and Matrimonio Segreto (Danish Royal Opera), Cenerentola (Festival Internacional de Música, Cartagena, Colombia), Pagliacci (short works at Wexford Festival Opera), a double bill of Bastiano e Bastiana and Paisiello’s Serva Padrona (Lugo Opera Festival, Teatro Comunale di Bologna), Così fan tutte (Ente concerti Marialisa de Carolis, Sassari), La finta giardiniera, Le nozze di Figaro (Cortona, Italy), Le Nozze di Figaro, Madama Butterfly (Co-operaCo London).

Jacopo has worked with the renowned Graham Vick as associate and revival director all over the world including: Glyndebourne Festival Opera, Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Birmingham Opera Company(including world premiere of Stockhausen's Mittwoch aus licht), Houston Grand Opera, Bregenz festival, New National Theater Tokyo, Teatro Sao Carlos in Lisbon on Wagner's Ring Cycle.

He has worked as an assistant throughout Europe and US with, among others, John Copley, Talmage Fauntleroy, Stefano Vizioli, Franco Ripa di Meana, Stephen Medcalf, Lorenzo Mariani.

Jacopo Spirei studied arts and drama in Bologna and filmmaking in New York at the New York Film Academy. He enjoys extensive teaching work with young, up and coming talents in opera. He has a long collaboration with the Opera Academy of the Royal Opera House in Copenhagen directing scenes and short works like: L'Heure Espagnole, Turn of the screw, Massenet’s Manon, Dialogues des Carmelites, Bohème, Wozzeck, has also worked with the young singers of the Accademia della Scala and the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.

Between 2006 and 2011 he was artistic director and founder of www.spurio.com, an experimental project involving opera, filmmaking, video art and live performance, that culmintated in the production of a feature film based on the myth of Orpheus with live music composed by Davide Fensi.

Future engagements include productions of L'incoronazione di Poppea, Oslo National Academy of the Arts, Falstaff, Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe, revival of Don Giovanni, Slazburger Landestheater.
