Adrian Clarke, Baritone

Born in Northampton, Adrian Clarke studied at the Royal College of Music and the London Opera Centre. He is a regular guest at London’s Royal Opera, where has roles have included Donald Billy Budd, John Shears Paul Bunyan, Le Dancaïre Carmen, Kostandis The Greek Passion, The Librarian Sophie’s Choice, Mitiukha Boris Godunov, Sid La Fanciulla del West, The One-Eyed Brother Die Frau ohne Schatten and Samiel Der Freischütz.

Elsewhere, he has sung The Caliph The Barber of Baghdad, Gazella Lucrezia Borgia andCarrasco Die Hochzeit des Camacho; for Buxton Festival Opera, Count Paolo in Leoncavallo’sLa bohème for English National Opera; Flamenco Baritone La vida breve, Don Ferdinand The Duenna, four roles in Julietta, Jack Spot in the premiere of Playing Away, Martino Love’s Luggage Lost, Podestà The Thieving Magpie, Jones Der KuhhandelandZuvetli One Touch of Venus for Opera North; Benoît / Alcindoro La bohème for Glyndebourne On Tour; Music Master Ariadne auf Naxos for Scottish Opera; Tomsky The Queen of Spades for Glyndebourne Festival Opera; and Baron Douphol La traviata for Welsh National Opera.

International engagements have included Mr Gedge Albert Herring, Traveller Death in Venice and Music Master Ariadne auf Naxos at the Landestheater Salzburg; Starveling A Midsummer Night’s Dream at La Fenice, Venice; Hunch-backed Fiddler A Village Romeo and Juliet at the Teatro Lirico di Cagliari; andJack Spot Playing Away, Kostandis The Greek Passion, Alcindoro La bohème, Sciarrone Tosca and Afron The Golden Cockerel at the Bregenz Festival.

Contemporary experience has included creating Maharal in John Casken’s Golem at the Almeida Festival; Peter Maxell Davies’ Mr Emmet Takes a Walk for Muziektheater Transparant and The Martyrdom of Saint Magnus for Opera Factory; as well as the premières of David Blake’s The Griffin’s Tale with the Northern Sinfonia and of John Cage’s Europera in Berlin, London, Paris and Strasbourg.

His recordings include The Triumph of Beauty and Deceit for Largo; Les Troyens, Carmen and Sophie’s Choice for Opus Arte DVD / Blu Ray; Golem for NMC; The Duenna for Chandos; Andrea Chenier and The Merhcant of Venice for Unitel; The Greek Passion for Koch; and Mr Emmet Takes a Walk for Psappha.

Conductors with whom he has worked include Betrand de Billy, Semyon Bychkov, Constantinos Carydis, Robin Engelen, Andrew Greenwood, Harmut Harnchen, Diego Masson, Erik Nielsen, Daniel Oren, Antonio Pappano, Sir Simon Rattle, Esa-Pekka Salonen and Ulf Schirmer.

His recent engagements have included First Sentry Les Troyens for the Royal Opera, London; Mathieu Andrea Chenier and SalieroThe Merchant of Venice for the Bregenz Festival; Father Barré The Devils of Loudon for the Royal Danish Opera; Baron Douphol La traviata for the Royal Opera, London, on tour to Japan; the title role in Blond Eckbert for Muziektheater Transparant (also at the Bregenz Festival); and Haudy Die Soldaten for Dutch National Opera (also in New York and for the Ruhrtriennale).
